Dr. Barbee is an infectious disease physician whose work intersects the clinical, research and public health aspects of bacterial sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Her research has primarily focused on gonorrhea epidemiology, testing and treatment. In addidtion to antimicrobial resistant gonorrhea, Dr. Barbee has extensive clincial and public health experience working in syphilis control.
Dr. Barbee completed her undergraduate work in Art History at Northwestern University. She then served as a community health volunteer in the Peace Corps in Nicaragua She completed medical school at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, and a masters in public health at the University of Michigan. Dr. Barbee moved to Seattle, Washington for internal medicine residency at the University of Washington where she also completed an infectious diseases fellowship. At the University of Washington, Dr. Barbee was an Associate Professor and had a joint appointment with Public Health -- Seattle & King County where she was the Deputy Director of the HIV/STD Program and Medical Director of the Sexual Health Clinic. Dr. Barbee joined the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as the Clinical Team Lead for the Divsion of STD Prevention in 2022.
