Bryan Grenfell has over 40 years’ experience as a researcher in infectious disease dynamics and control. He has made a number of significant contributions to understanding of the population dynamics, micro-evolution and control, particularly of acute immunizing infections such as measles. This work has led to international recognition, notably Fellowship of the Royal Society of London (2004) and award of the 2022 Kyoto Prize for proposing the phylodynamic synthesis of pathogen immuno-epidemiology and evolution. Over his career, Grenfell has also trained around 80 junior researchers, many of whom are now senior group leaders. Grenfell has also undertaken a variety of advisory roles on public health issues: eg to governments and the WHO; I was also on the Governing Board of the Wellcome Trust and co-directed the NIH-DHS RAPIDD (Research and Policy in infectious Disease Dynamics) Program.
