Dr. Maria Van Kerkhove is an infectious disease epidemiologist who leads is the World Health Organizations's COVID-19 Technical Lead and leads WHO’s work on Emerging Diseases and Zoonoses in the Department of Epidemic and Pandemic Prevention and Preparedness in the Health Emergencies Programme. For more than 20 years, her work has focused on mitigating the emergence and re-emergence of high threat zoonotic pathogens - including avian influenza, MERS-CoV, SARS, SARS-CoV-2, Ebola, Marburg, plague, Zika and others - to better understanding factors associated with spillover and ensuring that research directly informs public health policies for action.
