Dr. Catherine “Katie” Brown has been the State Epidemiologist at the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (MDPH) since 2018 and State Public Health Veterinarian since 2006. She received her DVM from the University of Minnesota, a Master of Science in Wild Animal Health from the University of London, Royal Veterinary College and a Master of Public Health from Boston University. Following 10 years of clinical veterinary practice, 8 of them working in urban wildlife medicine, Katie turned a growing interest in public health and communication into a career. In 2005, she was awarded a CSTE Applied Epidemiology Fellowship at the New York State Department of Health. She has published on multiple zoonotic and vector-borne diseases of public health importance including rabies, Lyme disease, eastern equine encephalitis (EEE), West Nile virus and salmonella from live bird markets. She is a recognized subject matter expert on the topic of rabies and has participated on several ACIP workgroups on rabies pre-and post-exposure prophylaxis and is a co-author of multiple articles on rabies in Up To Date. Dr. Brown is an invited lecturer at Tufts University, Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine and multiple other universities in Massachusetts. She is currently the President-Elect of the Council of State and Territorial Epidemiologists.
