Senior Scientific Researcher in the Vaccine Development area of the Department of Bacteriology - US Naval Medical Research SOUTH
I currently work as the head of non-human primate (NHP) studies in Naval Medical Research SOUTH (NAMRU SOUTH) into the prophylactic area. This unit was established to design, coordinate, and evaluate new therapeutic and prophylactic candidates at NHP, establishing Aotus nancymaae as a diarrhea model for traveler's diarrhea. As part of my duties in this unit, it is to develop and provide scientific support in the experimental design with NHP, as well as to generate scientific reports. I have participated in important preclinical trials evaluating potential vaccines against major diarrhea-causing pathogens such as Shigella flexneri, Campylobacter jejuni, and Enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli. As well as, in the understanding of the pathoadaptation of these enteropathogens in the Aotus and in the evaluation of the innate response of the NHP against these three pathogens. In addition, I lead numerous studies evaluating new prophylactics for the prevention of traveler's diarrhea, refining the NHP model for passive oral treatments. In addition, I am currently actively involved in the study to establish the microbiota of Aotus nancymaae and in understanding the behavior of the microbiota and the new diseases associated with intestinal dysbiosis.
