Jeroen is Head Molecular Bacteriology & Bacterial Epidemiology at Janssen Vaccines & Prevention. Jeroen is based in Leiden and has 20+ years experience in molecular and medical microbiology. He leads a team of scientific professionals in the United States and the Netherlands. The team focuses on molecular bacteriology & bacterial epidemiology to develop novel vaccines against antibiotic resistant bacterial infections in older adults. Jeroen has worked at Janssen since 2012.
Prior to moving to industry, Jeroen obtained his Ph.D. through a collaborative project between Utrecht University and the Netherlands Vaccine Institute investigating the application of mutant lipopolysaccharides for the construction of less reactogenic Bordetella pertussis strains suitable for implementation into safer whole-cell pertussis vaccines. Thereafter, he continued his academic career by working on genetically modified (lipo)polysaccharides to improve tuberculosis vaccines at the VU University medical center.
