Sasheela Ponnampalavanar is a Infectious Disease Physician at the University Malaya Medical Centre (UMMC) and Professor of Medicine at University Malaya, Malaysia. She is currently the Head of the Infection Control Department in UMMC. Under her guidance and stewardship, the hospital achieved notable distinctions, including the prestigious 2022 APSIC Hand Hygiene Excellence Award and the esteemed 2018 APSIC Safe Surgery Award, showcasing her unwavering commitment to maintaining and elevating infection control standards.She is a Committee Member of The Malaysian National Antimicrobial Resistance. She was awarded the 2020/2021 Fulbright scholarship, and was attached Hospital Epidemiology and Infection Control Department at the John Hopkins Hospital.
She is chairperson of the Malaysian Society of Infectious Diseases and Infection Control(MyICID)Infection Control Interest group and an exco member the Malaysian Society of Infectious Disease and Chemotherapy (MSIDC). Her main interest are in prevention of hospital acquired and device related infections, antimicrobial stewardship , multidrug resistant organism, tropical medicine.
Dr Sasheela is involved in several local and international research collaborations in these areas.
