Dr. Beatrice Muriuki is a post doctorate scientist at MassBiologics of the University of Massachusetts Chan Medical School (Umass Chan Medical School), USA.
Before starting her post doc in March 2022, she was a PhD candidate in Cell and Molecular Biology of Infectious Diseases at the University of Ghana. Her PhD project investigated endemic Burkitt lymphoma (eBL), a naive B cell lymphoma, affecting children in equatorial Africa.and Papua New Guinea. The project was hosted by Moormann laboratory at the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI), Kisumu, Kenya and at the Umass Chan Medical School. Her project established tumor cell lines from the B cells and expanded sorted NK cells derived from eBL patients, for co-culture and functional assays. The research findings were published in Scientific Reports journal.
In 2016, Beatrice received a prestigious PhD fellowship from DELTAS Africa. In 2018, she received a travel award from West African Center for Cell Biology of Infectious Pathogens to the Umass Chan Medical School to complete her PhD project. In 2021, she was awarded the best African Women Researcher by Merck Foundation for her exemplary work in cancer research.
Prior to joining the University of Ghana, she was a tutor at South Eastern Kenya University, Kenya and was responsible for teaching Biology Units to undergraduate students as well as guiding the students through basic research projects.
Beatrice spent four years conducting research on hepatitis B and C viral co-infections in HIV/AIDs at the Center for Viral Research, KEMRI, Nairobi, Kenya. She earned a Master of Science in Immunology from Kenyatta University, Kenya and a Bachelor of Education Science (Chemistry and Biology) degree from Moi University, Kenya.
