Assistant Professor
Northwestern University/Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago
Dr Arshad is an Assistant Professor at the Northwestern Feinberg School of Medicine and an Attending Physician in Pediatric Infectious Diseases at the Ann and Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago. She joined Northwestern in 2018 after completing her Pediatric Residency and Infectious Diseases Fellowship at Duke University in Durham, NC. Prior to that she obtained her MBBS degree from the Aga Khan University in Pakistan.
Academic Focus
Dr Arshad's academic focus encompasses the following areas of research: 1) mechanisms of bacterial pathogenesis and antimicrobial resistance, 2) novel targets for pathogen-specific therapeutics, and 3) the effect of gut colonization with MDR organisms on the infant microbiome and child health. She leads an NIH funded basic science laboratory that is part of the Host-Microbe Interaction (HMI3) research group at the Stanley Manne Children’s Research Institute at Lurie Children's. Her laboratory has expertise in protein structure-function analysis, Gram negative bacterial parthenogenesis in particular uropathogenic E. coli, drug development against bacterial virulence factors and use of animal models to study urinary tract infections and perinatal transmission of pathogens. She is also interested in conducting human clinical studies to understand the transmission dynamics associated with mother-infant transmission of multi-drug resistant Gram negatives and acquisition of these strains during international travel.
Dr Arshad's clinical expertise focuses on the management of urinary tract infections in pediatric patients, especially those with recurrent disease or antibiotic resistant bacteria. She is also interested in management of infections with antibiotic resistant bacteria in Transplant patient population.
