Infectious Disease Consultant

Anna Nikopoulou MD, PhD, is currently an Infectious Diseases Consultant at the George Papanikolaou General Hospital of Thessaloniki with great interest in clinical medicine, travel medicine, infection control, and antibiotic stewardship. She completed her medical studies at Democritus University of Thrace and specialized in Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases at AHEPA University Hospital of Thessaloniki. Her research has focused on the study of angiogenesis in patients with liver cancer. Recently, she has been actively involved in the Drive-AMS project, organized by Radboud University Medical Center, whose main objective is to reduce the inappropriate use of antibiotics resulting in antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in healthcare facilities through supporting effective implementation of Antimicrobial Stewardship (AMS) interventions using a step-wise behavioral change approach. She has published in peer-reviewed medical journals and conference proceedings and contributed to medical textbooks. She has been practicing as an infectious disease consultant at the General Hospital of Thessaloniki "G. Papanikolaou" for 12 years. She is also responsible for the outpatient clinic for infectious diseases and travel medicine. She is a member of the Committee for the Control of Nosocomial Infections, which is actively involved in the surveillance and control of nosocomial infections, the Medicines Committee of Papanikolaou Hospital, and the Committee for the Rational Use and Monitoring of Antibiotic Consumption in the Hospital. She participates as an instructor and supervisor in the postgraduate course "Nursing Specialization in Intensive Care" and in the training programmes of the various departments of G. Papanikolaou Hospital. She has organized and participated in hand hygiene training for the healthcare staff of G. Papanikolaou Hospital. She is a member of scientific societies and institutes in Greece.
