Dr. Tempe Chen graduated magna cum laude from the University of California at Berkeley with a degree in Molecular & Cell Biology (Emphasis in Immunology) in 1996. She received her medical degree from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine at Yeshiva University in 2001. She then completed her internship and residency training in General Pediatrics at Connecticut Children’s Medical Center in 2004 and subsequently completed her fellowship training in Pediatric Infectious Diseases at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA at Mattel Children’s Hospital in 2007.
Dr. Chen joined the medical staff at Miller Children’s and Women’s Hospital Long Beach and Long Beach Memorial Medical Center in July 2007 and has served as Vice Chair of the Department of Pediatric Medicine since January 2020. She has been a certified HIV Specialist through the American Academy of HIV Medicine since 2011 and provides care to children and their families at the Bickerstaff Pediatric Family Center. In 2017, Dr. Chen was appointed Director of Medical Informatics for the MemorialCare Health System. She is a certified Physician Builder for the Epic EHR and board certified in Clinical Informatics through the American Board of Preventive Medicine. Dr. Chen has been on the clinical teaching faculty at the UCI School of Medicine since 2009 and was recently promoted to Associate Clinical Professor.
In her spare time, Dr. Chen likes to spend time with her husband and son at Disneyland. She also likes to volunteer and support numerous charitable organizations including The Painted Turtle camp, The Bucket List Project Foundation, Save Our Sick Kids Foundation, and St. Baldrick’s. Before the COVID-19 pandemic hit, Dr. Chen shaved her head 4 years in a row raising over $64,000 for pediatric cancer research, earning her the title of Squire of Hope.
