Dr. Shah is Associate Professor in the Division of Infectious Diseases at Johns Hopkins (JH) School of Medicine, and is faculty in the JH Center for TB Research. He is Medical Director for the Baltimore City Tuberculosis Program, an attending physician at the Johns Hopkins Hospital, and is board certified in ID and internal medicine. He received his MD from UCSF, his PhD from Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, completed residency at Emory University, and infectious disease fellowshiop at Johns Hopkins.
Dr. Shah’s research involves evaluating and implementing novel HIV and tuberculosis (TB) intervention strategies in resource constrained settings. He evaluates new TB diagnostic technologies and assesses the cost-effectiveness of emerging strategies for HIV and TB care domestically and globally, and has led evidence review for WHO guideline development of the urinary LAM assay. Additionally, his research interests include evaluating the use of mobile health (mHealth) technologies to optimize adherence to TB therapy. He is the inventor of a video-DOT platform to allow HIPAA compliant, patient-centered video-based asynchronous directly observed therapy (vDOT). He is also the inventor and principal investigator for HIV-ASSIST (HIV Antiretroviral Selection Support and Interactive Search Tool), a free, online interactive site that allows for patient centered, individualized,decision-support for ARV selection for people with HIV (www.HIV-ASSIST.com). He is lead developer for LTBI-ASSIST, and interactive decision-support tool for managment of latent TB infection, in conjunction with the Global TB Institute (https://bit.ly/3PGzslw).
Dr. Shah serves on the Maryland Tuberculosis Guidelines committee, and is President for the National Society of TB Clinicians. He is recipient of the Glasser Award for TB control and NTCA Award for TB Researcher of the Year. He is committed to teaching and mentoring, and is a recipient of the Johhns Hopkins Center for Global Health's Faculty Advising Award, and was inducted into the Johns Hopkins Distinguished Teaching Society. Additionally, Dr. Shah serves as co-director for the microbiology and infectious disease curriculum for students at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine.
He is Deputy Editor for the Clinical Infectious Diseases, the clinical journal for the Infectious Disease Society of America, and he is an author of more than 60 peer-reviewed studies. He is a member of the International Union for TB and Lung Disease, the International AIDS Society, and the Infectious Diseases Society of America.
