Dr. Nick received a B.S. degree in Biochemistry from Washington State University in 1985, and graduated from the University of Washington School of Medicine in 1989. He completed a Residency in Internal Medicine at the University of Washington in 1992, and a Fellowship in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at the University of Colorado in 1997. He is Board Certified in Internal Medicine, Pulmonary Medicine, and Critical Care. He has been on the faculty of National Jewish and the University of Colorado Denver since 1997, and is Professor of Medicine at both Institutions. Dr. Nick is also Director of the Colorado Adult Cystic Fibrosis Program and the Colorado NTM National Resource Centers. His clinical interests center upon issues relevant to the adult CF patient, including infection by nontuberculous mycobacteria, and the diagnosis of CF in older individuals. Dr. Nick’s research interests include the study of mechanisms that allow neutrophils to respond to bacterial infections in the lung, and the coordination of response by the neutrophil. Other interests include how bacteria such as M. abscessus and P. aeruginosa respond to the neutrophil in the context of CF lung disease. Finally, he is a principal investigator of CFF-sponsored trials to standardize the diagnosis of NTM pulmonary disease, establish the expected response to guideline-based therapy, identify of biomarkers of NTM infection, and test novel NTM therapeutics.
