A seasoned medical epidemiologist, clinician and emergency manager, Dr. Mary Foote is a specialist in infectious diseases and serves as the Medical Director in the Office of Emergency Preparedness and Response at the New York City Department of Health & Mental Hygiene (DOHMH), one of the largest public health agencies in the world. In 2015, she established the NYC DOHMH’s communicable disease preparedness program aimed at maintaining and enhancing healthcare readiness for emerging infectious diseases and supporting regional communicable disease response planning. As lead for clinical operational preparedness for NYC, she supports healthcare and community all-hazards preparedness work.
Critical to the Health Department’s successful responses to mpox, measles, Ebola, Legionnaires and Zika as the Healthcare System Support Director, Dr. Foote served on the front lines for New York City throughout the COVID-19 response with a focus on health communications, infection control, healthcare worker safety, allocation of scarce resources and access to care. She continues to lead NYC’s therapeutics programs for COVID-19 and mpox where she has helped pioneer innovative approaches to ensure equitable access to new treatments, receiving a NewYorkBIO COVID Hero of New York award for this work.
An alumna of the Emerging Leaders in Biosecurity program at the John’s Hopkins Center for Health Security, she earned her MD and MPH from the University of Arizona and completed a residency in Social Internal Medicine at Montefiore Medical Center in Bronx, New York, before going on to Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia to complete a fellowship in Infectious Diseases. In addition to her work with the DOHMH, Dr. Foote maintains a clinical position at Callen Lorde Community Health Center, a global leader in LGBTQ+ healthcare.
