Silvia Chiang, MD ScM is a physician-researcher with expertise in child and adolescent tuberculosis. She is board cetified in Pediatric Infectious Diseases and General Pediatrics, and attends on the pediatric infectious disease service and the RISE Tuberculosis Clinic.
After graduating from Stanford University, Dr. Chiang worked as a Peace Corps community health volunteer in rural Peru. She then attended medical school at Case Western Reserve University. In 2012, during her last year of pediatrics residency in Boston, she returned to Peru to work with Socios En Salud (Partners In Health-Peru) on tuberculosis research. She continued her collaboration with Socios En Salud throughout her pediatric infectious diseases fellowship, which she completed at Baylor College of Medicine and Texas Children's Hospital.
Dr. Chiang has had NIH and foundation grants to conduct adolescent tuberculosis research in Peru. She has additional ongoing research collaborations on pediatric tuberculosis in Ukraine. She was award a Fulbright U.S. Scholar Award to conduct TB research at the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) during the 2023-24 academic year.
In 2021, Dr. Chiang collaborated on evidence reviews to inform the upcoming World Health Organization guideline updates on managing tuberculosis in children and adolescents. This work included leading experts from over 18 different countries to produce consensus recommendations on caring for adolescents with tuberculosis. She is first-author of two international expert consensus documents on the management of children and adolescents with TB.
