Dr. Sosa is a Professor and the Infectious Diseases Division Chief at the University of New Mexico (UNM). He attended medical school at the University of Panama and completed his internal medicine and infectious diseases training at the University of Miami. After his fellowship, he returned to Panama and worked at the largest referral hospital in the country where he started an infectious diseases training program and an HIV/AIDS antiretroviral therapy program. He was, for 10 years, the General Director of the Gorgas Memorial Institute a renowned public health research center in Panama. He has conducted clinical investigations on vaccines, antiretroviral agents, leishmaniasis and arthropod borne illnesses. He returned to the United States in 2019 and during the COVID-19 pandemic, he participated in regular online sessions to educate healthcare providers using the ECHO Model at UNM. He is currently participating in a NIH-sponsored clinical trial to treat blood stream infections in patients who use intravenous drugs.
