Dr. Chris Pfeiffer currently serves as the Infectious Diseases Section Chief and the Hospital Epidemiologist at the VA Portland Health Care System (VAPORHCS) and is an Associate Professor of Medicine at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU). He completed residency training at University of Wisconsin Madison followed by a Masters in Health Science concurrent with ID & Medical Microbiology fellowships at Duke University. He divides his time between administration, public health work, collaborative research, and clinical care. Since 2012, he has worked with the Oregon Health Authority (OHA), Oregon's state health department, serving as the Medical Director for Oregon’s Drug-Resistant Organism Prevention and Coordinated Regional Epidemiology (DROP-CRE) Network. The primary goals of DROP-CRE Network are to plan and implement the statewide strategy to prevent, detect, and control the spread of multidrug-resistant organisms with a focus on carbapenem-resistant Enterobacterales and most recently Candida auris in Oregon. He is involved in several multicenter VA collaborations with a primary focus in healthcare-associated infection. He also contributed to the successful development and national implementation of an automated MDRO alert system across the VA, now called VA Bug Alert (VABA). He enjoys the outdoors, tennis, and spending time with his family.
