Dr. Gupta is the Associate Chief of Staff and Chief of Infectious Diseases at VA Boston Healthcare System. She is a Professor of Medicine at Boston University School of Medicine and Lecturer at Harvard Medical School.
Dr. Gupta is a clinical investigator with expertise in large database studies and multi-site clinical trials on prevention and treatment of bacterial infections. Her research topics include UTI, surgical site infections, MRSA, and multi-drug resistance epidemiology. She serves as Chair of the current IDSA Clinical Practice Guidelines on Treatment of UTI in Women and is a co-author on the recently published IDSA Clinical Practice Guidelines on Asymptomatic Bacteriuria.
Dr. Gupta led a national VA study demonstrating the ineffectiveness of treating asymptomatic bacteriuria and pyuria prior to implant and cardiac surgeries. She now is leading a VA Health Services Research and Development funded study to develop and implement a toolkit to reduce unnecessary testing and treatment of urine cultures prior to surgery.
