MSc/MD Student
University of Calgary, Canada
My name is Emily Au and I am a current master's student in Dr. Michael Parkins' lab in the Department of Microbiology, Immunology, and Infectious Diseases at the University of Calgary Cumming School of Medicine. I began my research career early in my undergraduate studies in a microbiology lab at the University of Calgary where I worked as an assistant lab technician and lab manager. During this time I also conducted multiple undergraduate research projects involving thermosensory proteins and intrinsic silver resistance in Pseudomonas aeruginosa. After graduating from the Bachelor of Health Sciences (Biomedical Sciences) program at the University of Calgary, I joined Dr. Michael Parkins' lab at the University of Calgary Cumming School of Medicine as a master's student due to my interest in translational research. My current project aims to use wastewater surveillance to investigate and monitor antimicrobial resistance prevalence in tertiary-care hospitals to augment infection prevention and control (IPC) and antimicrobial stewardship programs in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. I am also a student in the University of Calgary's Leaders in Medicine program and will be completing a joint MSc/MD degree and will matriculate into the MD program in 2024 and begin my undergraduate medical studies in which I will use my graduate research to further my medical training into hopefully one day becoming an infectious disease doctor.
