Robert Sawyer received undergraduate and medical degrees from the University of Michigan. He performed his general surgery residency at the University of Virginia including a three-year surgical infectious disease research fellowship. Dr. Sawyer then completed a multi-organ transplant fellowship at the University of Michigan and joined the staff of the Department of Surgery at the University of Virginia in 1996, including performing a Surgical Critical Care Residency. He was eventually promoted to Professor of Surgery and Public Health Sciences. In September 2017, he was named Professor and Chair of Surgery at the Western Michigan University Homer Stryker MD School of Medicine. After becoming the Senior Associate Dean for Research, he was named Hal Jenson MD Dean, President, and Chief Executive Officer. Recently, he has returned to the role of Senior Associate Dean for Research. He has more than 400 publications and is currently Editor-in-Chief of Surgical Infections.
