Dr. Spyros Chalkias received his MD degree from the University of Athens, Greece, and completed an internal medicine residency at Yale and clinical Infectious Disease fellowship at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC), Harvard Medical School. He also completed a translational research fellowship at the Center for Virology and Vaccine Research, BIDMC.
Dr. Chalkias has extensive academic medicine and biotechnology industry experience. As a physician-scientist at BIDMC, he developed novel deep-sequencing platforms to detect viral genomes in clinical samples and characterized viral variants that confer increased virulence. He received both National Institute of Health (NIH) and industry funding. During a 6-year tenure in industry, he led activities that span early and late clinical development and led multi-disciplinary teams of physicians and other specialists. Dr. Chalkias is currently Senior Director of Infectious Diseases at Moderna Inc. and leads the adult multivalent booster vaccine development program for COVID-19.
