Angela Hewlett MD, MS, is Associate Professor of Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases at the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC). She is also Associate Professor at the University of Nebraska College of Public Health, and Associate Professor in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery. She serves as Medical Director of the Nebraska Biocontainment Unit, Director of the UNMC Orthopedic Infectious Diseases service, and is the George W. Orr MD and Linda Orr Chair in Health Security.
Dr Hewlett is an active member of the Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America (SHEA) and Fellow in the Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA) and has served on several of SHEA’s national committees as well as the IDSA Clinical Affairs Committee. She is a past-President of the Nebraska Infection Control Network (NICN), and immediate past-President of the Musculoskeletal Infection Society (MSIS). Her research interests include healthcare-associated infections, complicated bone and joint infections, and biopreparedness, and she has authored over 100 publications and book chapters. Her textbook ‘Planning for Bioemergencies: A Guide for Healthcare Facilities’ was released in 2018. Dr. Hewlett enjoys her role as an academician, and actively participates in the education of fellows, residents, and students. She serves as Faculty Sponsor of the Infectious Diseases Student Interest Group at UNMC, and has earned multiple Department of Internal Medicine ‘Top Teacher’ awards.
Dr. Hewlett earned a BA in Biology from the University of Texas at Austin, and an MD from the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) in Galveston, Texas, where she also completed a residency in Internal Medicine. She served as Chief Resident, then completed a 2 year fellowship in Infectious Diseases followed by a 1 year NIH-funded research fellowship with a focus in Hospital Epidemiology and Infection Control. She also holds a Masters degree in Clinical Sciences-Clinical Investigation from the University of Texas Medical Branch.
