Assistant Professor
Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine
Dr. Egon A. Ozer, MD PhD, is an Assistant Professor of Medicine, Infectious Diseases at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine and Director of the Center for Pathogen Genomics and Microbial Evolution. He earned his PhD in Molecular Biology and his MD through the Medical Scientist Training Program at the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine in 2006. He then joined the Physician Scientist Training Program at the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine and completed his residency in Internal Medicine and fellowship in Infectious Disease before joining the faculty of Northwestern University in 2012. His work has focused on genomic explorations of microbial pathogens including uncovering genetic determinants of virulence and antimicrobial resistance and investigations into the transmission and evolution of bacterial, fungal, and viral pathogens. Over the last two years Dr. Ozer has applied his expertise in microbial whole-genome sequencing and genomic analysis to SARS-CoV-2 in order to track the population structure of the virus in Illinois and abroad and to investigate relationships between viral genetics and clinical features in COVID-19 patients. In 2021 he was named the Director of the new Center for Pathogen Genomics and Microbial Evolution in the Havey Institute for Global Health.
