Director, Infection Prevention

Dr. Brooke Decker has served as the Director of Infection Prevention at the VA Pittsburgh since November, 2014, where she leads the Infection Prevention department as well as the Antimicrobial Stewardship program. She is a 2007 graduate of Case Western Reserve School of Medicine and completed Internal Medicine Residency at Case Medical Center in Cleveland. She completed dual subspecialty training in Critical Care and Infectious Diseases at the NIH in Bethesda, Maryland, and continued to work for the Department of Health and Human Services at NIH after fellowship, joining the Healthcare Epidemiology Service. Her primary research interest is the hospital-associated transmission of resistant organisms and waterborne pathogens. In July 2014, she co-led the team that developed policy and procedures at NIH to provide intensive care services to patients with ebolavirus disease. She was the recipient of the 2014 SHEA Trainee Award for her research and received a coin from the Secretary of Veterans Affairs during his visit in honor of her work with the water management team at VA Pittsburgh in 2015. Dr. Decker has over 25 peer-reviewed articles, won VA Pittsburgh physician of the year in 2015 and 2019, and has been instrumental in steering VA Pittsburgh to a leader in hospital water safety.
