Dr. Ricardo La Hoz received his medical degree from Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia (UPCH) in Lima, Peru, where he was honored with the “CONTENTA” award for outstanding achievement in his graduating class. He completed his Internal Medicine residency and Infectious Diseases fellowship at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB).
He currently serves as Director of the Transplant Infectious Diseases Program, Program Director of the Transplant Infectious Diseases Fellowship, Medical Director of the Transplant Services Center, and Professor of Medicine in the Division of Infectious Diseases and Geographic Medicine at UT Southwestern Medical Center. His dedication to patient care and medical education earned him election to the Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA) Honor Medical Society and recognition as a Fellow of the American College of Physicians (FACP).
Dr. La Hoz’s clinical and research interests focus on the prevention and management of infectious complications in hematopoietic stem cell and solid organ transplant recipients.
In recognition of his leadership and contributions to the field of transplantation, he was named a Fellow of the American Society of Transplantation (FAST) in 2017 and a Fellow of the Infectious Diseases Society of America (FIDSA) in 2019. He has served on the Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network/United Network for Organ Sharing (OPTN/UNOS) Ad Hoc Disease Transmission Advisory Committee since 2016, including as Chair from 2020 to 2022. Furthermore, from 2024 to 2026, he served as the American Society of Transplantation (AST) Infectious Diseases Community of Practice Chair and currently serves as the Past Chair. In addition, in 2019, he joined the Editorial Board of the American Journal of Transplantation as an Associate Editor.
