Dr. Ponce’s research interest include the use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and microbial source tracking (MST) to better understand infectious diseases. Main focus has been on 1) the geographic distribution of the parasitic disease Schistosomiasis in Brazil, analyzing new approaches to transmission dynamics in rural and urban settings; 2) the role of surface waters and sanitation in the distribution and acquisition of antibiotic resistant bacteria in Brazil and the USA. Currently his lab is working on the role of sewer overflows and underground water as a potential novel mechanism of transmission of antibiotic resistant bacteria in communities in central Georgia.
