Voluntary Professor of Clinical Medicine
University of Miami
I am a Voluntary Professor of Clinical Medicine at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine (Professor since 2006, Voluntary status since 2019) and in 2020 retired as the Chief of Medicine at the Miami VA (since 2012). I received my MD from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas, Texas, in 1973 and then moved to Seattle, WA, for my internship and residency in Medicine at the University of Washington. After my residency I spent 5 years at the Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta, GA, as an Epidemic Intelligence Officer (EIS) and researcher in hospital associated infections. I returned to the University of Washington in 1981 to do an Infectious Diseases Fellowship and Chief Residency in Medicine. I then joined and remained on the faculty at the University of Washington for 22 years until I moved to the University of Miami in 2006. I have a 40-year history of clinical care and research in Infectious Diseases and especially UTI in women since 1981 when I started my fellowship in infectious diseases. My principal research focus has been to better understand the epidemiology, pathogenesis, treatment and prevention of UTI in women. I have authored or co-authored multiple UTI chapters in the influential web-based medical text, UpToDate. I also have a strong interest in antimicrobial stewardship and methods to reduce our dependence on antimicrobials in the treatment and prevention of infections, especially UTI. I have authored or co-authored 150 peer-reviewed journal articles and many other articles, book chapters and abstracts in the fields of UTI, antimicrobial stewardship, STIs, and HIV/AIDS.
