Laura D. Zambrano (PhD, MPH) is the lead epidemiologist for the Severe Illness and Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome team in the new Coronavirus and Other Respiratory Viral Diseases Division within the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). She is the CDC co-lead for the Overcoming COVID-19 and RSV-PIC pediatric hospital networks, which have been instrumental in understanding severity and clinical characteristics among children hospitalized for COVID-19, MIS-C, and RSV. While on the CDC COVID-19 response, she has led analyses on pediatric vaccine effectiveness against severe outcomes, MIS-C social disparities and risk factors, COVID-19 clinical and demographic characteristics and trends, and COVID-19 severity among pregnant persons. Prior to joining the COVID-19 response, Dr. Zambrano had a background in waterborne and vector-borne diseases. After growing up in the D.C. area, she earned an MPH in Epidemiology from the George Washington University and a PhD in Environmental Health Sciences from Emory University. She currently lives in Atlanta with her husband, son, and beloved labrador retriever.
