Aileen Chang, MD, MSPH, FACP, an Associate Professor of Medicine at the George Washington School of Medicine and Health Sciences in Washington, DC, earned her MD from Columbia University College of Physicians & Surgeons, where she studied dengue fever as a Doris Duke International Fellow. She completed her Internal Medicine Residency and MSPH at the University of Miami. She is certified in tropical medicine by the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, and in rheumatology by the American College of Rheumatology.
When chikungunya erupted for the first time in the western hemisphere in 2013, Dr. Chang received special training from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Florida Department of Health in the management of the disease. As a part of the chikungunya task force, she trained Florida physicians to manage local outbreaks.
As principal investigator on the Rheumatology Research Foundation (RRF)-funded grant to study Chikungunya in the Americas, Dr. Chang characterized the frequency of chikungunya arthritis in the largest Latin American cohort to date, investigated whether persistent viral presence in joint tissue was the mechanism for persistent symptoms, and put together a strong interdisciplinary scientific and logistical team to perform research in Colombia and the United States. Her work was published in Arthritis and Rheumatology and reviewed by Nature Reviews Rheumatology.
During this time, Dr. Chang established a laboratory at George Washington University and at the Universidad Libre in Colombia to perform translational science. She is currently a National Institute for Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIAMS) K23 scholar studying interleukin-2 therapy for chikungunya arthritis in a Colombian cohort and mouse model, and the principal investigator on the study of methotrexate in the treatment of chikungunya arthritis.
