Gregory A. Poland, MD, MATh, MACP, FIDSA, FRCP, LHD, is the Mary Lowell Leary Emeritus Endowed Professor of Medicine with joint appointments in the Divisions of Adult and Pediatric Infectious Diseases and a Consultant in the Department of Internal Medicine, Mayo Clinic and Foundation, Rochester, Minnesota. In the Mayo Medical School, he serves as Professor of Medicine, Infectious Diseases, with joint appointments in Molecular Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics. Dr. Poland also serves as Graduate Faculty in Virology and Gene Therapy as well as in Molecular Neuroscience.
Dr. Poland earned his medical degree at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine, Springfield, Illinois. His post-graduate residency was at the University of Minnesota/Abbott-Northwestern Hospital, and he did subsequent graduate course work in clinical trials, statistics, research design, epidemiology, and molecular biology at the Mayo Clinic Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science.
Dr. Poland studies the immunogenetics of vaccine response in adults and children via clinical, laboratory, and epidemiologic vaccine research. His laboratory uses cutting-edge genetic, omic, and systems biology approaches to understand vaccine-induced immunity. His research has been continuously funded by the National Institutes of Health, since 1991, and he is the recipient of an NIH Merit Award.
Dr. Poland has contributed chapters to books such as Vaccines, and more than 700 peer-reviewed journal papers. He is Editor-in-Chief of Vaccine, on the editorial boards of journals such as the American Journal of Infection Control, Immunology, and Cell Biology. He has also given more than 1,000 symposium lectures and presentations. His professional memberships include Fellow of the Infectious Diseases Society of America, Master of the American College of Physicians, and Fellow of the Royal College of Medicine, London.
