Hamidreza Karimi-Sari (Hamid) is a distinguished clinical liver disease researcher with a focus on viral hepatitis. He currently serves as a research fellow at the Department of Infectious Diseases, Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.
As a part of the RAPID-HCV study, he also plays a crucial role in the treatment of hepatitis C among people who use drugs.
Throughout his career, Hamid has made significant contributions to the field, notably as a scientific committee member in the 6th and 7th Tehran Hepatitis Conferences. He also played a key role in developing a unique national guideline for hepatitis C treatment in Iran.
Driven by a passion for social impact, Hamid has organized four national awareness-raising campaigns in Iran to promote viral hepatitis testing and linkage to care. These campaigns have educated hundreds of medical students and provided thousands of free hepatitis B/C and HIV tests.
In addition to his research and advocacy work, Hamid has shown dedication to public health by screening labor and street children for viral hepatitis and HIV and administering hepatitis B vaccinations.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, he demonstrated his commitment to patient care by working as a general practitioner in an outpatient clinic, providing primary care services mainly to outpatient COVID-19 patients.
Hamid's dedication to harm reduction in Iran led him to collaborate with two harm reduction centers, screening people who use drugs for hepatitis C and facilitating their access to treatment. Additionally, he contributed to evaluating the COVID-19 pandemic's impact on harm reduction activities in Iran by conducting interviews with clients.
As an esteemed member of the scientific community, Hamid serves as an editor for PLOS One and Hepatitis Monthly journals, having completed over 300 peer-review and editorial tasks to date.
